Buying the first real, functional pair of baby shoes can be daunting. Everyone seems to sell them, but it can be hard to find the right pair for those first few steps outside the house. We only have 2 criteria for kid shoes:
- They have to fit comfortably.
- They have to stay on, because with twins we can’t be chasing down 4 lost shoes.
Before buying our first pair, I solicited recommendations from friends. The same few brands kept getting mentioned. We also went to a local shoe store to get their feet measured. After much shopping and research, our winner is a brand called Pediped. Pedipeds are like glue to their feet. We have been using the same pair of shoes every single day for nearly 6 months, and we are yet to even have one shoe fall off of them. That’s a real accomplishment considering how hard our kids are on their gear. They run like crazy, climb at the playground, dig in sand, roll around in leaves, wrestle with their twin… Yet, these shoes have held up perfectly.
We particularly love the Pediped Jake model since they’re so new to walking. From 13 months – 18 months, they fit into the size labeled Large: 18-24 months. The soles of these shoes are made of leather, so they’re extremely flexible. Unlike the stiff soles on the shoes you find on other brands, these are very forgiving of our uncoordinated walkers. The velcro is excellent quality, so they stay fastened. Also, it’s easy to open the shoes up wide enough to slip those wiggly and squirmy feet in without much resistance. The photo below is after 6 months of intense use…the soles are still in outstanding shape!
I already have the next size up in the Pediped Jake’s waiting for the day that they outgrow these.
If you’re looking for more options, Bobux (the Step Up model for new walkers) is another brand that came highly recommended. They have soft, flexible soles and are also known for staying on. Whichever shoes you decide on, good luck managing your new walkers outside of the house!
